Why Every Mobile Entertainment App In India Suddenly Wants Your UPI ID

Open any mobile entertainment app in India today, whether it streams movies, hosts fantasy sports, or runs a live casino table, and the checkout screen looks almost identical.

A UPI ID field sits above every other payment option, often already pre-filled. That is not a design accident.

Indian users completed 24,161.69 crore UPI transactions in the 2025-26 fiscal year, a 30% jump from the previous year, according to figures released by the National Payments Corporation of India.

App developers have simply followed where the money already moves.

For a live table format such as monopoly big baller, where a player places a bet and expects a result within seconds, a UPI mandate that clears almost instantly is no longer a nice-to-have.

It is the baseline players expect before they open a session at all.

What Changed On The Backend Of Every Checkout

The scale involved explains the shift better than any marketing pitch. NPCI data puts the average daily volume at roughly 66 crore transactions in 2025.

A single peak month, March 2026, processed 2,264 crore transactions worth close to ₹29.53 lakh crore.

Three apps, PhonePe, Google Pay and Paytm, handle nearly 88% of that flow between them. For a product manager building checkout inside an entertainment app, that concentration is decisive.

Building against three UPI rails covers almost the entire addressable Indian user base. Maintaining card processing, net banking and wallet top-ups separately adds cost for a shrinking share of traffic.

The average ticket size per UPI transaction has also fallen, from roughly ₹1,478 in 2024 to about ₹1,293 in 2025.

Smaller, more frequent payments match exactly the pattern mobile entertainment generates, whether that is a fantasy contest entry or one round of a live table game.

Monopoly Big Baller And The Checkout Flow Behind Its Live Format

Live game shows built around continuous, fast-paced rounds put unusual pressure on payment rails. Bettors move in and out of a table between draws rather than staying in a single long session.

Evolution’s bingo-style format runs on a theoretical return to player close to 96.10%, and rounds resolve within a couple of minutes.

That pace means deposit friction has an outsized effect on whether a player stays engaged for the next draw.

Cards in this live show pay out on a scale from 2:1 up to 199:1 per line. Separate three-roll and five-roll bonus rounds push the ceiling higher on rare outcomes.

A house edge of roughly 3.9% sits behind that structure, so the operator’s margin depends on round frequency rather than any single big result.

A UPI-linked deposit that lands in under five seconds keeps a player inside the round they were watching.

A gateway that redirects to a separate banking app and back can cost that same player a live draw entirely.

Biometric Checks Are Quietly Replacing The Single OTP

The checkout experience is also shifting toward device-based verification instead of a single OTP text message. Fingerprint and face-unlock confirmations now sit behind most UPI apps by default.

That layer adds a fraction of a second to checkout, but it removes the most common failure point, a delayed or misdelivered SMS code, from busy network hours entirely.

For apps selling subscriptions or recurring in-app credit, that shift determines how many screens sit between a tap and a confirmed payment.

Why Wallets Still Matter Alongside UPI

UPI’s dominance has not eliminated prepaid wallets, it has repositioned them. Players without a linked bank account, or those under banking age limits, still rely on wallet balances funded through cash-in points or linked cards.

MobiKwik alone still holds roughly a quarter of India’s prepaid wallet transaction value. That is evidence the wallet layer has not disappeared, only shrunk to a specific use case.

Recurring billing adds a second reason wallets persist. UPI AutoPay handles most subscription-style mandates cleanly, but some entertainment platforms still route small, frequent top-ups through a wallet balance to avoid triggering a fresh authentication step on every transaction.

That trade-off, speed against extra verification, now sits at the centre of how Indian entertainment apps design their entire payment stack.

As this outlet has noted when examining how payment options impact player experience more broadly, the deciding factor for most users is rarely the underlying rail.

It is whether money moves in and out without friction or delay.

The direction is clear even without a single dominant winner. UPI has become the rail every mobile entertainment app in India tests against first.

Wallets fill the gaps it leaves, and the checkout screen itself is now treated as seriously as the content sitting behind it.
